About Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Snoring is bothersome for bedpartners, but it can also be a sign of a very serious sleep disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA results from collapse of the upper airway in sleep and results in pauses in breathing lasting from seconds to minutes.

This disorder decreases the quality of sleep and results in feeling tired or sleepy during the day. OSA can also lead to other serious health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack and stroke, and should always be taken very seriously. OSA can be effectively treated with an appliance called CPAP that gently splits the airway open with positive air flow. Surgery or an oral (dental) appliance may also be appropriate treatment.
