ICU is moving to a two-bin system as part of a pilot program for the entire hospital. The new shelves are deeper and will allow one bin to be placed in front of the other. The two-bin system is geared to ensure the nursing staff has all of the materials they need for patient care, while optimizing time and supplies from a materials management perspective. When the nurse uses the materials/supplies in the front bin, she will move the bin to the top of the cart and move the other bin to the front of the shelf. Materials management will round once/day and pick up the empty bins. They will fill the bins and return them the following day. All of the materials/supplies need to be placed in the appropriate size bin with a par specific to the unit.
